On Saturday, Jan. 25, Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbot made here first public appearance as the state’s first Hispanic first lady before thousands of pro-life supporters waving signs for protection of the unborn. She read a letter from her husband, Gov. Greg Abbott, thanking them for their support in protecting lives of the unborn and improving the health of women.

The chairs of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development and Committee on Pro-life Activities welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court’s January 23 announcement that it would review the drug protocols of lethal injection executions in the state of Oklahoma. The court will consider whether the procedures violate the U.S. Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

The feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, February 8, has been designated as the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking. Last year, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Migration designated such date as an annual day of prayer for survivors and victims of human trafficking. Later that year, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General at the Vatican, that the 2015 event will also be observed internationally.
