The 112th Annual State Convention of the Texas Knights of Columbus was held on April 29 - May 1 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi. Bishop Michael Mulvey, a brother Knight, provided a welcoming message and participated in many of the convention events.

When community members in the Diocese of Corpus Christi met with then newly appointed Bishop Edmond Carmody in 2000, they wanted something done about the large numbers of young people leaving high school before graduation.

At the end of the Gospel of Matthew, before his Ascension into heaven, Jesus commits to his disciples this poignant command: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age (Mt 28:19-20).”

It was the 1960s and the world was in transition. Thousands were dying in the fields of Vietnam. American political leaders were being assassinated. Tens of thousands were marching in the streets against the war; many others were protesting discrimination against blacks, low wages for farmworkers and other social issues. The United States government had launched a war against poverty; the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was legal; and the Catholic Church was gripped by the dramatic changes brought about the by Second Vatican Council.

The Incarnate Word Academy varsity softball team will advance to play in the TAPPS Regional Playoff game on May 5 at 6 p.m. at the O’Connor Athletic Complex in Victoria.

Bishop Michael Mulvey presided over a Memorial Mass in honor of Father James H. Flanagan, founder of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, on May 3 at Our Lady of Corpus Christi Adoration Chapel. Father James Flanagan died on March 24 in Bosque, New Mexico. He was 91.

The Incarnate Word Academy varsity baseball team will compete in the TAPPS Bi-District Playoff Game on May 5 at 5 p.m. at the National Little League Field in Corpus Christi.

Incarnate Word Academy sophomore Millicent Alvarado and junior Jessica Bang both received superior ratings at the state Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) competition on April 23 in San Antonio.

The Cathedral Concert Series presents Franz Josef Haydn's timeless masterpiece, The Lord Nelson Mass, in the resounding acoustics of Corpus Christi Cathedral. The House Armed Services Committee has passed an amendment offered by Rep. Steve Russell, R-Okla., intended to allow faith-based contractors to provide services to the military without giving up their religious identity. The amendment now goes to the full House for consideration.

Sacred Heart Church in Rockport held first Communions on May 1 and Confirmations on April 16 in Corpus Christi Cathedral.

The Incarnate Word Academy Middle and High School Level band and choir performed at Mount Carmel Home, an assisted living center, on April 29 and after the performances students mingled with residents.

Speakers present the spiritual beliefs of Islam, Muslim and Native Americans at Incarnate Word Academy High School Level, where students are currently studying different religions from around the world. The speakers are Sister Annette Wagner, Rabbi Ilan Emanuel, and Imam Mohamed El Ghobashy, who have met or are meeting with students during their religious studies classes.
