On Monday morning, the Student Council of St. Patrick School had planned an event to proclaim Catholic Schools Week for the City of Corpus Christi, but the cold weather delayed school, so it was postponed to Thursday. All the children gathered in the Church, dressed as their favorite historical figure or book character.
The members of the Student Council delivered speeches they had written themselves, explaining why Catholic education is important and what they love about their school. Peter McFarland spoke about the first mission of Catholic Schools Week – faith: “Our faith can be challenged when we experience difficulties in our lives. This is when we must hold on to the truth that God is always with us and will never leave us.” Dressed as St. Maximilian Kolbe, he highlighted the heroic faith of that saint and their school patron, St. Patrick.
He also shared that at St. Patrick, they learn to strive for academic excellence and physical fitness, as well as “love, faith and kindness.” Service plays a big part at St. Patrick, too, as student Leti Palma explained the various projects students carry out for the church and the community. Another student mentioned twelve reasons why Catholic education matters.
Rochelle Limon, who works at the mayor’s office, thanked the students and read the official proclamation for Catholic Schools Week, to be celebrated in the last week of January. She handed the official document, signed by Mayor Paulette Guajardo, to Principal Elizabeth Burton. The students concluded the event with their school song.
