The days of a bishop are filled with commitments, meetings, pastoral visits, decision-making, listening, praying – only to mention a few. Looking through the pictures the diocese published over the years, we see Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrating Mass, welcoming people into the Church, confirming youth, meeting with young people, breaking ground for new buildings, introducing synodal listening sessions, and ordaining priests and deacons.
During his nearly 16 years as our shepherd, Bishop Mulvey introduced Fraternity Days for priests, built the St. John Vianney Residence for retired priests, expanded the Newman Centers in Corpus Christi, Kingsville, and Beeville, encouraged and supported prison ministry, and, in the last four years, brought the faithful together for the annual “State of the Diocese.” But behind all these activities was a deep desire – to help the faithful live the Gospel and foster a spirituality of communion, as St. Pope John Paul II wrote in his Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte, “to make the Church the home and the school of communion.”
We wish him all the best in this new phase of his life and hope that he will visit the diocese often and soon!
