It was a special moment—after four or more years of studying, countless hours of learning, and many exams, the goal was reached: fourteen students from the Newman Center at TAMUCC graduated this spring. Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated Mass and blessed the graduates: John Peña Baker, Gabriella Flores, Kevin Garcia, John Moses Garza, Juan Gonzales, Margaret Mikula, Candace Montoya, Larisa Saenz, Leah Saldivar, Ally Soliz, Sofia Vela, Brianna Villarreal, Madelyn Weber, and Jamie Zinsmeyer.
In his homily, the Bishop congratulated the graduates on their success and told them that at the Newman Center, besides attending Mass, going on retreats, doing service, and finding friends, they also encountered Jesus. “Jesus Christ is alive – this is one of the most important things, we don’t walk through this world alone.” This faith, the bishop continued, would be visible on their faces, in their actions, and in their lives.
Referring to Pope Leo XIV, the Bishop said, “We are called to create a world of peace. As people of peace, the students are called to spread this peace to others by loving. “Love, and do what you want,” Bishop Mulvey quoted St. Augustine. After Mass, he blessed the students, who continued their celebration at a reception at the Newman Center, sharing what these years meant to them and bringing family and friends together.
