Holy Cross Church was overflowing with guests and parishioners who attended the Centennial Mass on Sunday, Sept. 14. The choir, led by Marsha Hardeman, performed classic Gospel songs like "Oh the Blood of Jesus" and "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" as the congregation swayed and sang along.
Father Yul Ibay, STD, pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Father Arularasu Mathias, Msgr. Seamus McGowan and Father William Norvel, SSJ, superior general of the Josephites priests and brothers, concelebrated Mass.
In his homily Father Norvel congratulated Holy Cross Parish on their 100-year anniversary paying special tribute to St. Katharine Drexel and the contributions of diocesan priests, religious and Josephites and who gave generously to the African American community throughout the years.
A reception followed Mass at the Solomon P. Ortiz International Center where guests were treated to a luncheon, a silent auction and history boards of Holy Cross Parish. Chris Greenwood and Diana Ramirez emceed and Father Ibay blessed the meal.
Matriarchs Rodessa Jones, Ula Shaw, Cora Houston and Thelma Jefferson, all in there 90's, were recognized for their contributions to Holy Cross Parish throughout the years.
Other guests included Msgr. Louis Kihneman, Vicar General of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Mayor Nelda Martinez and Nueces County Judge Lloyd Neal.
David Longoria, parish council president and his wife Terri Longoria helped organize the event. HEB and Citgo were major sponsors for the event.
