The parking lot was full, and Most Precious Blood Church was packed to the last seat. It was Altar Server Recognition Day, and this year, 386 Altar Servers were honored for their years of service. They arrived with their families from every corner of our diocese, and excitement filled the air.
After a brief period of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Bishop Michael Mulvey referenced the Gospel reading in his homily, where Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. “Jesus was serving, He washed the feet of the apostles, He died for us – everything in His life was about love and service.” In every Eucharist, Jesus tells us, “This is my body,” and “This is my blood.” The bishop continued, “We are here to thank Him, we can tell Him, ‘I am nothing – You are everything.’”
Three elements were essential in our faith—the Eucharist, listening to the Word of God, and love of neighbor. “Omnia Vincit Amor – Love conquers everything.” He recalled receiving a picture of an altar server retreat at Holy Family Parish, where the older servers helped prepare and give testimonials for the younger ones. “This is beautiful—you can form a community of young people in the Church.”
He thanked every altar server for their commitment, and blessed the tassels, crosses and plaques that they received. One hundred forty-four altar servers were recognized as Cross Bearers. They are all in high school, have served for at least three years, and commit themselves to continuing until they graduate from high school. All received a red tassel and sash.
Ninety-eight received a plaque as “outstanding altar servers” for their exemplary service. And 77, who have served for 10 years, received a cross, a purple tassel, and a sash, including posthumously to a young man who had passed away.
