Over two dozen youth, teens and adults were baptized and confirmed during Easter Vigil Mass at the Corpus Christi Cathedral by Bishop Michael Mulvey on Saturday evening.
The Mass began with the Blessing of the Fire, symbolizing the light of Christ triumphing over darkness and the lighting of the Paschal Candle by Bishop Mulvey from the fire. Afterwards, the Bishop, along with several priests, deacons and others, processed to the altar while parishioners lit their individual candles in the darkened church along the way.
During his homily, Bishop Mulvey congratulated those being baptized and confirmed for making a special journey in their faith and reminded those who have already been baptized this was a great opportunity to renew the flame that will always continue to shine within.
“The greatest redemption God gives us through His son Jesus is Eternal Life. How many of us think of eternal life? Perhaps most of us fear that moment, but it is the most perfect moment of our life. The Easter candle reminds us of the light of Christ that has been put into all of us,” he said.
He also took a moment to remind everyone that whatever difficulty has entered their lives; they are not alone – God is always there.
“For those of us who have been baptized since infants, we tend to forget. We need to be aware…to wake up. Jesus Christ is alive. This is what we proclaim tonight. Christ is the light inside you, and it is a moment to treasure. Turn to God and know He is there,” Bishop Mulvey said. “Always be aware of who you are… that if you need help, it is there. Tonight is a proclamation of what we truly believe: Christ became human. He died for us and He rose from the dead and we will rise with him and live forever, in front of God and for all eternity.”
